Utility Strike Prevention
Utility professionals have long known of the dangers to the operator and commercial costs associated with accidental strikes to buried utilities, whilst locating such cables and pipes for servicing and replacement.
Trial pit excavations to expose these utilities are often carried out in the absence of accurate drawings and site surveys, resulting in accidental utility strikes, operator injuries and costly repairs or replacements.
Among the most serious, and potentially fatal injuries associated with utility strikes are electrocutions and burns, resulting from accidental strikes to electricity cables and gas pipes.
Other potentially serious injuries include Hand Arm Vibration injuries and broken wrists, from traditional hand excavation tools, as well as crush injuries from collapses in larger excavation pits.
Back injuries, strains and sprains from manual handling of heavy materials such as backfill, are also commonplace. In 2007 and 2008, the construction industry reported over fifty thousand injuries of this nature alone.
In addition to any medical treatment or compensation expenses for injuries, or in extreme circumstances death, the employer is liable for costly replacement and repairs to both the utilities themselves, and any surrounding structures. Contractual and commercial costs can also be incurred from fines levied in connection with service outages and delays to project schedules.
Now, J K Guest Utility Mapping Solutions present the safest and most cost-efficient solution for utility location, mapping and precise excavation of all types of buried utilities.
